OSHA-linked selection reference

Welding helmet shade chart for an initial safety review.

Use the process, electrode size, current and plate thickness to locate the relevant rule or guidance before choosing a filter.

A welding helmet shade chart is a starting point for selecting protection against radiant energy. It is not a general promise that one shade fits every welding task. The applicable requirement depends on the work, and an employer must consider the actual hazard and protective equipment arrangement.

Source note: the condensed table below follows the general-industry guide in OSHA 29 CFR 1910.252(b)(2)(ii)(H). Check the live regulation and the standards that apply to your workplace before making a selection.

Condensed OSHA general-industry shade guide

OperationShade number
Shielded metal arc, 1/16 to 5/32 inch electrodes10
Gas-shielded arc, nonferrous, 1/16 to 5/32 inch11
Gas-shielded arc, ferrous, 1/16 to 5/32 inch12
Shielded metal arc, 3/16 to 1/4 inch electrodes12
Shielded metal arc, 5/16 to 3/8 inch electrodes14
Torch brazing3 or 4
Light cutting, up to 1 inch3 or 4
Medium cutting, 1 to 6 inches4 or 5
Heavy cutting, 6 inches and over5 or 6

OSHA describes the table as a guide and notes that recommendations may vary with individual needs. The same rule also addresses helmet and hand-shield construction, face and neck coverage, removable filter and cover plates, lens condition and permanent shade identification.

Four inputs to collect before selection

1. Welding or cutting process

Start with the process. Shielded metal arc welding, gas-shielded arc welding, gas welding, oxygen cutting and brazing are not interchangeable chart rows.

2. Electrode size or plate thickness

Some table entries change with electrode diameter or material thickness. Put the actual value in the assessment rather than choosing from a broad process name.

3. Arc current

Other OSHA and consensus-standard tables use arc current as a selection variable. Record the working range and check the table that applies to the operation.

4. Complete eye and face protection

A helmet is part of an overall protection arrangement. OSHA guidance notes that welding helmets or face shields are used over primary eye protection where applicable. The hazard assessment must consider flying particles as well as radiant energy.

How to use this chart with the product catalog

After the safety requirement is defined, compare it with the exact filter record. Check the listed light state, welding shade range, cutting or grinding mode, control method and compatible helmet statement. If a product page does not state a required value, ask for the current model sheet. Do not infer the field from another model.

For the live source, read OSHA 29 CFR 1910.252 and the OSHA eye protection fact sheet. These sources support the safety context; they do not certify any product in this catalog.

Shade chart FAQ

Can I choose a helmet by shade range alone?

No. Shade range is only one selection variable. The process, current or electrode size, fit, primary eye protection and other hazards also matter.

Does a grind mode replace impact-rated eye protection?

This guide does not make that claim. Evaluate the complete eye and face protection required for grinding hazards.

Does this page prove a Yincheng model meets a standard?

No. Official safety references explain selection duties. Request current product documents for the exact quoted model and configuration.

Read each source in its stated scope

The nine-row table comes from OSHA's general-industry rule. The eye-protection fact sheet linked elsewhere on this page was written for shipyard employment. It is useful background, but it is not a substitute rule for every shop. Also watch the label beside a number. A recommended shade and a required minimum are not interchangeable terms.

What happens when the RFQ just says “welding helmet”?

My first response would be a question, not a product link: what process is the operator running? The next question depends on that answer. It may be electrode diameter, plate thickness or arc current. I would write down the range used in production, since a single test setting can hide the harder case.

Once the applicable row is clear, the buyer can compare the exact filter controls. The order should still name the shell, filter, inside cover lens, outside cover lens and primary eye protection in the arrangement. A blank field on a product page stays blank until the current data sheet answers it. A bright catalog photograph is not evidence of a shade or included part. That written trail gives the safety reviewer something to assess and gives receiving staff something concrete to inspect.

Read the chart in the context of the task

A shade number is not selected from the helmet name. The table begins with the operation. For shielded metal arc welding, the electrode diameter separates several rows. For gas welding and oxygen cutting, the workpiece thickness changes the recommendation. Other safety tables may use arc current. Record the real process variables before comparing a filter specification.

The chart also does not describe every hazard around the work. Flying particles, sparks, hot metal and nearby arcs can affect the complete eye and face protection arrangement. A supervisor or safety professional should review the task, the worker's position and the exposure of nearby people. The chart is one input to that assessment.

A five-step shade selection worksheet

Step 1: write the exact process

Use the full process name rather than a broad label such as welding. Note whether the task is shielded metal arc, gas-shielded arc, gas welding, oxygen cutting, brazing or another operation covered by the applicable rule.

Step 2: record the deciding variable

Write down electrode size, plate thickness or arc current as required by the relevant table. If the production range changes, evaluate the range rather than one convenient setting.

Step 3: identify the minimum protective shade

Read the applicable OSHA row and any consensus standard or company procedure that governs the work. Do not lower the shade because a product page uses a brighter marketing image. The live regulatory text is the authority for the OSHA requirement.

Step 4: compare the exact filter model

Open the auto-darkening filter catalog and check the exact model's light state, welding range, cutting range and grind state. A model with several ranges may require a particular control setting. If the field is missing, request the current model sheet.

Step 5: document the complete arrangement

Record the helmet shell, filter, inner and outer cover lenses, primary eye protection and any respiratory or head protection used with the task. For a digital example, review YC-K filter details and confirm the quoted configuration rather than relying on the category description.

Buying checks beyond shade number

For a distributor or industrial buyer, shade range is only one line in the request. Add viewing area, sensor count, control method, power source, battery replacement, delay range, sensitivity range and the target shell. These values affect product selection and spare-parts planning even when two filters cover the same dark-shade range.

Ask whether the quotation includes inner and outer protection lenses, headgear and batteries. Confirm the dimensions and part identity for replacement items. A similar cassette size or outer-lens size does not prove that the filter will mount in another shell.

Request current documents for the exact model and destination. OSHA guidance explains employer selection duties; it does not approve a Yincheng product. Product documentation and workplace selection evidence serve different purposes and should be reviewed separately.

Common chart-reading errors

One common error is treating the highest available shade as automatically correct. Another is using an electrode-size row for a process that is actually governed by current or thickness. A third is confusing the light state with the welding shade. Finally, a grind mode label does not answer the complete impact-protection question for grinding work.

For the operating sequence behind these controls, read how auto-darkening welding helmets work. When the task and product variables are ready, send the model and shade requirements for configuration review.
